Senator Lodge returns the papers pertaining to the matter of the colliers. In his opinion, it is fine if the Department sends coal in foreign vessels just as long as there are not any more American vessels that can carry it. Lodge also mentions that some New York newspapers say he supports a third term. In fact, Lodge would like to “smash them thoroughly.”

Acting Secretary of State Adee forwards William Loeb a message from Lientent Commander James H. Glennon from Acajutla, El Salvador, that the American armed steamer President will be transferred to El Salvador. Additionally, President Fernando Figueroa of El Salvador greatly desires American intervention. Adee suggests that while material aid is impracticable, a moral intervention would achieve the same goal.

Secretary to the President Loeb informs Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt that President Roosevelt will speak to her about Secretary of War William H. Taft taking the Mayflower for his trip to Panama. Roosevelt thought that the First Lady would want to use the Mayflower, and if so, Taft could use the Columbia. Edith Roosevelt responds in a handwritten note, “Let Sec Taft take the Mayflower by all means.”

Harvard University President A. Lawrence Lowell enjoyed his visit to the White House, but missed the opportunity to speak with President Roosevelt about immigration law. Though Lowell knows Roosevelt will be too busy during his trip to Massachusetts to visit, he asks if Roosevelt could address Harvard to help students see the connection between their studies and “the battle of life.”

Lieutenant Commander Preston informs Captain Pendleton that work has been stopped on the Hamburg-American Steamer Princessen Victoria Luise and the wreck abandoned. The Prinz Waldemar is being discharged and it is expected that she will be saved.

Rear Admiral Davis tells American Vice-Consul Orrett that he is expecting the supply ship Celtic to arrive at the Port of Kingston, and asks that Orrett deliver a letter to that ship’s captain if it arrives after Davis leaves. Davis stresses the importance of the American Consulate in Jamaica remaining open in the wake of the earthquake. He suggests that if Orrett ends up needing police protection, that he should ask the local government.

Chief Quartermaster Restad reports to Captain Mahan that after repairing the Plum Point Lighthouse, the Captain of the Vladimir told Restad that he wished Restad had repaired it a day sooner. Restad was involved with earthquake relief in the area.

Secretary of State Elihu Root is trying to avoid having President Roosevelt visit the Argentinian ship, as he thinks that it may set a precedent and that other nations would send their ships expecting to be visited by the president. Root will try to solve the problem by visiting the ship himself.

No change in the positions of the Russian and Japanese armies were noted this week. It is rumored that Japan has occupied a strategic point eighty miles east of Kirin. The defeat of Admiral Zinoviĭ Petrovich Rozhestvenskiĭ in the Sea of Japan leaves the Japanese a more direct route through which to deliver troops and supplies to armies in the field.

Scenes of the Panama Canal, generally in the natural order of passage, from a ship moving from the Atlantic to the Pacific. The ship passes by the Panamanian city of Colón on the Atlantic end, through the channel to Gatun Locks and into Gatun Lake, with views of the Gatun spillway and the Chagres River. From here she passes from Gaillard Cut (Culebra Cut), into the Pedro Miguel Locks and into Miraflores Lake; then through the Miraflores Locks and into the final portion of the canal, passing the Canal Zone towns of Ancon, Balboa, and Balboa Heights. Final views are of the Ancon Hospital (Gorgas Hospital) and the United States Administration Building at Balboa.
