Postcard with black and white photograph of the Roosevelt, a ship built for Robert E. Peary’s 1905 and 1908 Arctic explorations, alongside a glacier near Cape York, Greenland, August 1906. The ship was named for Theodore Roosevelt, who had been very supportive of Peary’s expeditions.

Still photos depict Theodore Roosevelt’s arrival in New York Harbor, his speech at the Battery, and the parade held in his honor June 18, 1910, when he returns from his extensive African and European travels. Views of ships in the harbor include a battleship, probably the dreadnought South Carolina, the reception committee cutter Androscoggin, the liner Kaiserin Auguste Victoria, on which the Roosevelt party sailed from Europe, a smaller cutter, the Manhattan, and other vessels. William Loeb, Roosevelt’s former secretary, is among welcoming dignitaries. William Jay Gaynor, Mayor of New York City, and Roosevelt appear on the speaker’s stand at the Battery where Roosevelt expresses his joy on returning to his native country. Final views of the parade include Rough Riders and other veterans of the Spanish-American War who serve as escort for Roosevelt.

Theodore Roosevelt received a rousing welcome in New York on June 18, 1910, when he returned from his extensive tour of Africa and western Europe. Flags are raised on the large cutter Androscoggin which carried the Roosevelt party into the docking area. The smaller cutter, the Manhattan, is shown passing the Androscoggin. The film includes brief shots of policemen waiting by a passageway, the Androscoggin moving into the dock, and views of Roosevelt and William Jay Gaynor, Mayor of New York, on the speaking platform at the Battery.

President Roosevelt must reinforce the verdict of the Commission in regards to the case. Roosevelt reviews the members of the commission and highlights the Army and Navy representatives that were on the board. Governor Benjamin B. Odell and Judge Hasbrouck have spoken out on behalf of Inspector Robert S. Rodie in regards to his role in the sinking of the General Slocum.

Uncle Sam stands on a wharf with five diminutive figures with attributes of the rulers of Austria (Franz Joseph I), Russia (Nicholas II), France (Felix Faure), Germany (William II), and Italy (Umberto I), and with John Bull representing England. Uncle Sam is showing the others an American steamship constructed out of bundles, barrels, and bales of exports, many indicating revenue in dollars, which, he believes, they “can’t resist.”

A wave labeled “Republican Voters’ Revolt” crashes into the dining room of a ship where “Cannon, Payne, Taft, Knox, Sherman, Root, Aldrich, Woodruff, Dalzell, Crane, Wickersham, Lodge, Parsons, Hitchcock, Depew, Hale, Elkins, Ballinger, Smoot, Penrose, [and] Cox” are dining, and upsets a dish of “Party Plums,” as well as a bottle of “Stalwart Grog.” Caption: “We were crowded in the cabin, / Not a soul would dare to sleep; / It was midnight o’er the waters, / And a storm was on the deep.”

Members of the 47th Congress carry on their shoulders large money bags labeled “Surplus $150,000,000” and “Appropriations,” and a sign that states, “No large appropriations for the Navy whilst Robeson is mixed up with it.” At the lead are three men, one dressed in armor labeled “Folger” carrying a sword labeled “Trust” and a shield labeled “Integrity,” another carrying a large ledger labeled “Chandler Navy Department,” and the third carrying a paper that states “Sen. Harris’s Exposure of Robeson.” John Sherman and John A. Logan are among the congressmen that follow. They are walking past George M. Robeson as an ogre sitting on a pile of skeletal remains of ships with skulls as figureheads and labeled “U.S.N.,” at the entrance to a cave labeled “Naval Committee.” Robeson is biting his fingernails. A notice at the entrance to the cave states, “$180,000,000 squandered and stolen during Robeson’s management of the Navy 1868-76.” Caption: “…He is, by reason of age, also of the many shrewd brushes that he met with in his younger days, grown so crazy and stiff in his joints, that he can now do little more than sit in his cave’s mouth, grinning at Appropriations as they go by, and biting his nails because he cannot come at them.”

Scenes of the Panama Canal, generally in the natural order of passage, from a ship moving from the Atlantic to the Pacific. The ship passes by the Panamanian city of Colón on the Atlantic end, through the channel to Gatun Locks and into Gatun Lake, with views of the Gatun spillway and the Chagres River. From here she passes from Gaillard Cut (Culebra Cut), into the Pedro Miguel Locks and into Miraflores Lake; then through the Miraflores Locks and into the final portion of the canal, passing the Canal Zone towns of Ancon, Balboa, and Balboa Heights. Final views are of the Ancon Hospital (Gorgas Hospital) and the United States Administration Building at Balboa.
