Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Henry Cabot Lodge

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Henry Cabot Lodge

President Roosevelt is sure Senator Lodge has seen his statement about Ohio Senator Joseph Benson Foraker and his letter about William Jennings Bryan. Roosevelt thinks Foraker’s situation is distressing, but corruption must be exposed. He is torn about William Randolph Hearst’s recent attitude. The amount of corruption in high places is shocking, but it has been natural for Roosevelt to fight it. Superintendent of Yellowstone National Park S. B. M. Young brought two such examples to Roosevelt’s attention, one regarding appointments tied to William McKinley’s election and one regarding the feelings of John Kean and Hamilton F. Kean about business interests.

Letter from William H. Taft to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from William H. Taft to Theodore Roosevelt

Secretary of War Taft updates President Roosevelt regarding the management of the National Parks. Superintendent of Yellowstone National Park S. B. M. Young would prefer rangers to the military, and Taft agrees with him, but Congress is putting the responsibility of park management on the War Department rather than the Department of the Interior. Taft warns that he accidentally engaged in cards on a Sunday, in case the press finds out. While traveling, he saw Secretary of Commerce and Labor Oscar S. Straus, and they discussed both Japanese naturalization and immigration of Russian Jews. Taft briefly lists his upcoming speeches.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Henry T. Allen

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Henry T. Allen

Roosevelt would be glad to meet with Henry T. Allen. Regarding the Yellowstone matter, he remembers being concerned about the friction between Allen and S. B. M. Young. However, he does not recall William Loeb, Carter, or Harry W. Child speaking against Allen and the park’s management. He only refrained from interfering with any action the Department decided was necessary. Although, his “memory may be at fault.”

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Silas McBee

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Silas McBee

President Roosevelt is pleased with Editor McBee’s reaction to Roosevelt’s stance on the appeal for clemency in a recent rape case and applauds a recent article on lynching. Roosevelt also comments on an article about Judge Alton B. Parker’s odd taste in art, noting that the article reflects poorly on its author, not on Parker. He compares the Parker article to a remark made by General Young regarding his disappointment in visiting the art galleries in Europe.
