Report by the Theodore Roosevelt Centennial Commission concerning the committee’s actions in the eighteen months since it was formed. The report begins with a list of activities by the commission including an announcement informing the public of the centennial and calling for participation. Following this announcement is a list of pledges from numerous executive departments in Washington, D.C., individual cities and states, as well as colleges and universities, all promising to participate in the centennial through observances, ceremonies, or exhibits. Additionally, a pamphlet is being distributed to schools to help plan classroom exercises in relation to the centennial. Many organizations are planning to participate including churches, conservation groups, and businesses. A brief description of Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota is provided as well as plans for the island memorial in D.C. A catalog of publications listing Theodore Roosevelt biographies and original writings is included. Also given is a summary of the contributions to be made by the Theodore Roosevelt Association. Appendices are attached to the report. The first (A) is a copy of the call to action for participation in the centennial. The second (B) is a pamphlet for the youth of America describing Theodore Roosevelt’s life and contributions and requesting that students participate not only in the centennial, but in the political process. Provided is a list of actions for this task.

The memo continues detailing the legislation passed with regard to the island, the engagement of the Olmsted Brothers to create a plan for development, the later legislation involving the permission granted to build a bridge over the southern tip of the island, and the retention of architect Eric Gugler and sculptor Paul Manship for the creation of a memorial. The memo concludes with a discussion of who will fund the memorial project and what legislation must be passed to move forward.

Act to establish a memorial to Theodore Roosevelt in the National Capital

Act of Congress establishing a memorial to Theodore Roosevelt. The act includes authorization for an island, previously known as Mason’s Island, to be renamed Theodore Roosevelt Island. It states that the Roosevelt Memorial Association, later called the Theodore Roosevelt Association, will have full approval of development of the island and that access be provided to and on the island and that memorial or statue be built.

Letter from the Olmsted Brothers landscape architecture firm detailing their progress on the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial to Gisela Westoff, Assistant Secretary of the Roosevelt Memorial Association, later Theodore Roosevelt Association. Upon the request of the architect John Russell Pope, a member of the Olmsted Brothers firm reports that the terrain of the island has been examined thoroughly. The letter goes on to apologize for a delay in plans due to one of the Olmsted brothers being ill and reports that Henry Vincent Hubbard has taken over the project.
