34th Theodore Roosevelt Association award dinner at Theodore Roosevelt House

Oscar S. Straus II, president of the Theodore Roosevelt Association, hosts the annual awards ceremony. Hermann Hagedorn, executive director, introduces Arthur Holly Compton, a nuclear physicist, and Thomas E. Dewey, Governor of New York, recipients of the Distinguished Service Medals in Science and Public Service. In their acceptance speeches, Compton speaks on public service and the importance of a free society working together towards a unified goal, as was done during the second world war, and Dewey speaks on the worldwide application of the “American Dream,” and the shifting struggles between the United States and the Soviet Union. Additional brief remarks are presented by Anne Lyon Haight, who comments on an upcoming merger of the Theodore Roosevelt Association and the Women’s Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Association.

Memorandum from Ray H. Mattison to H. Raymond Gregg

Historian Ray H. Mattison responds to H. Raymond Gregg, the regional chief of interpretation, regarding a proposal that the National Park Service make an intensive investigation of Theodore Roosevelt’s personal papers in order to gather information to make an archaeological investigation of the Elkhorn Ranch site. Mattison notes that he and others have already made thorough investigations into the relevant materials, and he believes there would be little to gain from retreading the same materials. He agrees, however, that the Elkhorn Ranch deserves a detailed study.

Maybe Roosevelt didn’t pay a visit to Crater Lake

The Theodore Roosevelt Association claims that a well known photograph of Theodore Roosevelt at Crater Lake is not actually Roosevelt. The photograph came under scrutiny as the National Park Service prepared to celebrate the centennial of Crater Lake National Park. Local lore claims that Roosevelt visited Crater Lake and the Baldwin Hotel in Klamath Falls, Oregon, but written evidence is lacking.
