Visiting Fellowships
The fellowship program, currently in-development, is part of the TR Center’s strategic plan.
In September 2026, the Theodore Roosevelt Center will welcome its first Visiting Fellow, Dr. Ryan Swanson. The fellowship program is part of the TR Center’s strategic plan. Dr. Swanson’s responsibilities as the inaugural fellow will be to fashion the parameters of the fellowship program for future applicants. At the outset of 2027, the TR Center plans to publish the fellowship criteria and eligibility requirements. At that point, we will have a clear idea of how the program will work based on Dr. Swanson’s experience and the Center’s resources.
Ryan Swanson is a Professor in the Honors College at UNM. He also serves as the Faculty Director of the Regents Scholars Program. Ryan earned his Ph.D. in history from Georgetown University 2008. His latest book, A Beautiful Shame: One Team’s Fight for Survival in a New Era of College Sports came out in 2025. Ryan has published widely on the role of athletics in the United States. In the classroom, Ryan teaches courses on Theodore Roosevelt, sports, history, and the legacy of failure. Ryan and his wife Rachael have three children. They reside in Corrales, NM.
