Letter from Alford Warriner Cooley to Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt

Letter from Alford Warriner Cooley to Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt

Alford Warriner Cooley shares with Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt how much he enjoyed the clippings detailing Theodore Roosevelt’s testimony before the Senate investigative committee regarding the acquisition of the Tennessee Coal and Iron Company. He agrees entirely with Roosevelt’s ideas, especially those concerning governmental control of large corporations. However, the issue of restoring competition remains. Cooley and his wife, Susan Dexter Dalton Cooley, enjoyed seeing the “charming and delightful” Kermit Roosevelt. The doctor gave Cooley a clean bill of health, although he intends to rest for a few months before returning to work.

Letter from Albert H. Walker to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from Albert H. Walker to Theodore Roosevelt

Albert H. Walker commends Theodore Roosevelt’s testimony before the committee regarding the acquisition of the Tennessee Coal, Iron, and Railroad Company. However, he fears Elbert H. Letter from Richard Wilson Knott to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from Richard Wilson Knott to Theodore Roosevelt

Richard Wilson Knott sends Theodore Roosevelt an article about the purchase of the Tennessee Coal, Iron, and Railroad Company. He acknowledges Roosevelt’s partial endorsement of Judge Elbert H. Gary’s proposal that the government can fix the price of any commodity. However, he disagrees with this notion and believes the solution is to relieve the American market from outside forces that determine prices. Knott agrees with Roosevelt about the necessity of additional legislation like the Sherman Act but warns against the “tyranny of the bureaucrat.” He asks Roosevelt to reconsider his position on the issue.
