Letter from Charles E. Hunter to Arthur I. Vorys
Charles E. Hunter, the Oklahoma Republican Central Committee chairman, explains the state’s “very hard campaign” to Arthur I. Vorys. Hunter’s committee believes they can elect part of the state ticket and possibly the legislature. However, “to win this fight it takes money,” more than the committee can raise. Hunter inquires if Vorys would petition the Republican National Committee to furnish funds to conduct the campaign.

Charles E. Hunter is sorry to bother Theodore Roosevelt again with this “Phillips episode,” but he has spoken to Phillips directly and is at a loss at how to proceed with this situation. Hunter’s position is that Phillips should publish a retraction of his earlier statements and may need to experience a complete “drubbing” to rectify this matter.

Hunter sends Theodore Roosevelt an article “absolutely made out of whole cloth.” He includes a typewritten copy of his response to the editor and the published version, which differs significantly. Hunter denies meeting a man called “Phillips” and assures Roosevelt he never talked to anyone about the Tennessee Coal and Iron Company merger.
