Letter from George Otto Trevelyan to Theodore Roosevelt

George Otto Trevelyan thanks President Roosevelt for the books, particularly American Hunter and its discussion of Yellowstone Park, bears and bison. Trevelyan describes his and his wife’s experiences in and appreciation for Rome. He also mentions Alice Roosevelt Longworth’s wedding, being ill with typhoid, and other books he has recently read.

A view of the zoological gardens in Rio de Janeiro’s Republic Square. A number of swans swim in the pond of water, while other birds stand along the shoreline. Paths lined with lights run along the water’s bank. Charles C. Myers says that this is one of “several beautiful parks of the city.”

All Creatures Great and Small: Presidential Gifts to the National Zoological Park

List of animals donated to the National Zoological Park in Washington, D.C. by Presidents of the United States. Twelve presidents from Grover Cleveland to Richard Nixon are on the list. Between January 1902 and November 1909, Theodore Roosevelt made twenty-seven donations of thirty-eight individual animals and birds, including thirteen opossums, to the zoo.

The “Cracker Jack Bears” No. 1

The Cracker Jack Bears attend the Lincoln Zoo. One sits in a tree and holds a box of Cracker Jacks. The other climbs a ladder into an airship. Number one in a series of sixteen cards that were sent for free to anyone who mailed in ten sides from Cracker Jack boxes or ten cents in “silver or stamps.”
