Opening remarks regarding a special three-part feature

William N. Tilchin charts the path to publication of the translation of a French booklet about Theodore Roosevelt by Leon Bazalgette. The 1905 tract was translated by Roosevelt biographer Edmund Morris and offered to John A. Gable, editor of the Theodore Roosevelt Association Journal (TRAJ), in 2001. Tilchin describes the rediscovery of the translation by Gregory A. Wynn and the subsequent enlistment of the French Roosevelt scholar Serge Ricard to assist in the publication and contextualization of the translation. The front cover illustrations from works by Ricard and Morris supplement the text.

Seeking to preserve and to enhance a valuable legacy

Seeking to preserve and to enhance a valuable legacy

William N. Tilchin examines the history of the Theodore Roosevelt Association Journal (TRAJ) with an emphasis on the work of John A. Gable, the long-time executive director of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) and the founder and editor of the TRAJ. Tilchin explains that Gable founded the TRAJ as a way to grow the membership of the TRA and to provide an outlet for the study of Theodore Roosevelt. Tichin notes that Gable succeeded in both tasks, and he explains the changes he has made to the TRAJ during his tenue which began in 2006. The changes include requiring peer review of submitted manuscripts, publishing regular columns like “Presidential Snapshots” and “The Material Culture of Theodore Roosevelt,” and updating the design and layout of the journal.

The article includes nineteen front cover illustrations from the TRAJ as well as six pages of excerpts from articles, reviews, and speeches. A text box with the mission statement of the TRA appears at the end of the article.

A major contribution to the literature on Theodore Roosevelt’s foreign policy

A major contribution to the literature on Theodore Roosevelt’s foreign policy

In his review of Henry J. Hendrix’s Theodore Roosevelt’s Naval Diplomacy, William N. Tilchin examines each of the seven chapters of the book, highlighting both the issues where he disagrees with Hendrix and praising him for “a well-crafted narrative account” of diplomatic milestones in Theodore Roosevelt’s presidency. Tilchin challenges Hendrix on the latter’s account of the Venezuelan crisis of 1902 – 1903, and he takes exception with one of the conclusion’s assertions, but he finds great value in Hendrix’s chapters on the Panama Canal, the Ion Perdicaris affair, the Treaty of Portsmouth, and Roosevelt’s transformation of the United States Navy. Tilchin’s review includes a number of references to prior works on Roosevelt’s diplomacy, highlighting the historiographical debates which have marked issues addressed by Hendrix.

Three photographs of naval commanders under Roosevelt and two illustrations, including the book’s cover, supplement the text. An advertisement for chocolate bars from The Chocolate Lady of Oyster Bay, New York, appears at the end of the review.

TR’s legacy: an historical review

TR’s legacy: an historical review

John A. Gable asserts that Theodore Roosevelt’s record as a conservationist and an environmentalist has not been adequately explored by historians and biographers, and he notes the work of Tweed Roosevelt in trying to correct this shortcoming. Gable also argues that Roosevelt, a man of many seeming contradictions, was both a use-conservationist and a preservationist when it came to natural resources, and he quotes Theodore Roosevelt and cites examples from his record as president to bolster his argument. The section also includes a text box with a quote from Theodore Roosevelt, an announcement about the establishment of the Theodore Roosevelt Center for American Civilization at Tulane University, and information about the 2005 annual meeting of the Theodore Roosevelt Association.

The article includes ten photographs of Gable with various figures, including three Presidents of the United States–Jimmy Carter, George Bush, and George W. Bush.
