Report on Filipino church dispute

This series of communications discusses a dispute between the Catholic Church and the Philippine Independent Church over the right to perform mass at a church in Malabon. The Catholic bishop ordered that non-Catholics cannot observe the mass in this Catholic chapel. The priests refused to let the Philippine Independent Church perform the mass and withheld a sacred stone for the observance. Correspondence includes a lengthy piece of canon law regarding the ownership of public and private chapels or oratories.

Edward Schnick blames Theodore Roosevelt for the Democrats gaining control of New York and the United States and releases his indignation at Roosevelt and his politics. He complains about the activities of Roosevelt at the 1912 Chicago Republican Convention. He thinks that Roosevelt sold President Taft out on account of his ego. He says that Roosevelt’s return from Africa looked like a “Barnum Circus.” He promises never to vote for Roosevelt again and urges him to retire from the public sphere.

Pope Leo XIII has had kind things to say about the American administration of the Philippines and hopes the nomination of Monsignor Giovanni Battista Guidi as apostolic delegate to the Philippines is pleasing to Roosevelt and Governor Taft.

Secretary of War Root is concerned about Catholic reaction to Governor General of the Philippines William H. Taft’s negotiations with the Vatican regarding the removal of the friars from the Philippines. Root believes that a great deal is being accomplished in Rome and that U.S. Catholic complaints are veiled attempts to halt negotiations. He hopes that Archbishop Ireland recognizes the benefit of such negotiations and elects to address the concerns of American Catholics accordingly.
