Boston 2015: A very memorable TRA annual meeting

William N. Tilchin gives a report on the 2015 annual meeting of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) held in Boston, Massachusetts. Tilchin lists the planners of the meeting, and he dwells on the events held at the Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center at Boston University and at the Algonquin Club in Boston. Tilchin describes the major events of the weekend, including the conferring of the TRA Boston Police Awards, the Saturday symposium, and the annual dinner. Tilchin highlights the symposium speakers and their topics as well as the winners of TRA awards presented at the dinner.

An inspiring and enjoyable weekend in Boston

William N. Tilchin provides a detailed look at the 2007 annual meeting of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) in Boston, Massachusetts. Tilchin notes the committee and leadership meetings of the TRA, and he highlights the field trips to the USS Constitution, Harvard University, and Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Tilchin’s account also covers the awards presented by the TRA, including the police award for Boston, the Bertha B. Rose Award, and the USS Theodore Roosevelt Junior Officer Leadership Award. Tilchin also notes the various speakers and the topics they addressed in different venues during the weekend meeting.

Two hero police officers from Long Island receive the 2005 Theodore Roosevelt Police Award

John G. Staudt describes the battles with cancer fought by the two winners of the 2005 Theodore Roosevelt Police Award for Long Island. Lee Krill of Nassau County, New York, and Kathleen A. McGowan of Suffolk County, New York, both successfully underwent cancer treatments and returned to police duty. Staudt describes the award ceremony at Sagamore Hill National Historic Site, lists the speakers, and notes some of the dignitaries and members of the Theodore Roosevelt Association in attendance.

A photograph of the winners with some of the dignitaries and speakers supplements the article along with a photograph of President Theodore Roosevelt with veterans of his Rough Rider regiment. A visit to Sagamore Hill National Historic Site by Governor George E. Pataki of New York and Senator John McCain of Arizona leads off this edition of the “News & Notes” section which also covers the 2002 Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) Police Award for New York City, and the opening of an exhibit, “The World of Theodore Roosevelt,” at the Nassau County Museum of Art. The section summarizes some of the material found in the front half of the issue and acknowledges the work of historians who are also members of the TRA, and it notes that the issue is dedicated to historian Stephen E. Ambrose.

Medals, awards, and grants sponsored by the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) constitute much of the “News & Notes” section. The honors include: the conferring of the Theodore Roosevelt Distinguished Service Medal to historian Stephen E. Ambrose; the 2002 TRA Police Award for the New Orleans, Louisiana, Police Department; the annual research grants given by the American Museum of Natural History; and the public speaking contests for New York City area schools. The section also highlights the Battle Efficiency Award won by the crew of the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt; the issuance of Theodore Roosevelt license plates by the state of New York; and a description of a fundraiser for the TRA’s Teddy Bear Fund, including a list of donors. The section concludes with the preface to Nathan Miller’s biography Theodore Roosevelt: A Life.

Report on the 77th annual meeting of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) held in and around Boston, Massachusetts in October, 1996. The report highlights the conferring of several awards sponsored by the TRA: the Theodore Roosevelt Distinguished Service Medal to author David McCullough; the Bertha B. Rose Award to Wallace Finley Dailey of Harvard; the Police Award for a member of the Boston, Massachusetts, Police Department; and the Junior Officer of the Year Award to a member of the USS Theodore Roosevelt. The report also details the annual elections of the TRA, including the selection of Lawrence H. Budner as the next president, and it notes that tours of Harvard, including the Theodore Roosevelt Collection, were given for those who attended. The report highlights the many years of service to the TRA of P. James Roosevelt and announces that a lecture series will be established in his name.

This edition of “News and Notes” details the annual police awards conferred by the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) in Dallas, New York City, and on Long Island, New York. It also reviews the results of the TRA Public Speaking Contests held in New York City and Long Island. The section updates readers on the status of Pine Knot, Theodore Roosevelt’s retreat in Virginia, and it promotes a two part documentary on Roosevelt to be aired on PBS in October 1996. “News and Notes” highlights the annual Fourth of July celebration in Oyster Bay, New York, and notes the retirement of Barbara Brandt from her post at the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site in Buffalo, New York.

The section also features an excerpt from a speech about Roosevelt given by Elihu Root in 1919, and it features four extracts from Roosevelt’s writings and addresses under the title of “TR Said…”. The 76th Annual Meeting of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) took place at Norfolk, Virginia, as well as onboard the U.S.S. Theodore Roosevelt. The Theodore Roosevelt Distinguished Service Medal was presented to former Secretary of the Navy John F. Lehman. The TRA also gave several gifts to the U.S.S. Theodore Roosevelt, and held its meeting of the Board of Trustees. One prominent topic during the Board of Trustees meeting was about the future of Pine Knot–the Virginia cabin of Theodore Roosevelt and Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt.

Other news items include the presentation of a number of Theodore Roosevelt-related awards, such as the TRA’s annual police awards, the appearance of Theodore Roosevelt on several television programs during 1995-1996, reports on several TRA-related activities like the annual teddy bear distribution, and an obituary of Dorothy R. Kidder. At the end of this section is a selection of several Theodore Roosevelt-related facts, including the names of the Secretaries of the Navy during Roosevelt’s presidency, and Roosevelt’s appointments to the Supreme Court.
