A handbook for Roosevelt’s Rough Rider Association, which includes a list of association officers, the association’s constitution and by-laws, and a list of the association’s members, honorary members, and the muster-out roll. Handwritten annotations about members or officers is present throughout. Pages 56-57 and 88-89 are uncut in the original and cannot be scanned.

Kermit Roosevelt and Theodore Roosevelt have left for Africa. A large crowd, including many friends, saw them off. The first day went well but overnight many passengers, including Theodore, suffered from seasickness.

John Campbell Greenway will be leaving for Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to look for job opportunities and hopes to be home for Thanksgiving. He advises that investment in real estate at Oyster Bay, New York, is a good speculation, and he has picked out a place for a cottage. Greenway will be spending some time with Theodore Roosevelt and John Avery McIlhenny. He is sending two horses to Gilbert Christian Greenway and the government should cover most of the expenses.

Kermit Roosevelt describes working as a camp counselor, his summer hunting plans, and John Avery McIlhenny’s engagement.

Ted Roosevelt would like to come visit John Campbell Greenway in the autumn after spending the summer with his family. He has been considering positions and wants to find work that really interests him. President Roosevelt is very busy with legislation and the upcoming convention. College football practice has started and Ted wants “one more chance at the old game.”
1908
President Roosevelt summarizes his autumn travel plans. He would like John Campbell Greenway to meet him and John Avery McIlhenny in New Orleans, Louisiana, and then travel to Little Rock, Arkansas.

Governor Roosevelt expresses his appreciation for a telegram sent by John Campbell Greenway. John Avery McIlhenny will be visiting on Sunday and Roosevelt wishes Greenway could be there too.

Governor Roosevelt is concerned about John Campbell Greenway’s health and requests that his brother, Gilbert Christian Greenway, send an update. Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt has returned from Cuba where she had a splendid time.

Vice President Roosevelt expresses satisfaction with the visit from the Younghusbands that Anna Roosevelt Cowles helped him arrange. Roosevelt agrees to a visit to Farmington in the fall. He describes fun activities he has enjoyed with his family and their friends lately, including a humorous swimming adventure he had with the children that is not looked upon fondly by their mothers.

Governor Roosevelt asks for advice about the nurses’ bill. Roosevelt states that he is taking care of the children while Edith Roosevelt is away, and describes them as being “really very cunning.” He also discusses the daily business of governing New York.

Theodore Roosevelt writes to Joseph Bucklin Bishop, saying Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt enjoyed his letter. Roosevelt discusses the results of the recent elections in the United States. He comments on the elections in New York, Massachusetts, Ohio, New Jersey, and New Mexico and the implications for the entire country.

John Milliken Parker sends a copy of Frank H. Tompkins’ book, Riparian Lands of the Mississippi River, and photographs of wild turkeys to President Roosevelt. Parker relays that Holt Collier, Major George M. Helm, Hugh Foote, and John Avery McIlhenny are on a bear-hunting expedition.

Walter Denis Denegre is pleased that President Roosevelt is considering Louisiana matters and Denegre is willing to provide information on Louisiana “men and matters.” He is friends with John Avery McIlhenny and describes him as a man that merits confidence.

Mary Eliza Avery McIlhenny expresses her sympathy regarding the events that brought President Roosevelt to the presidency. Her son, a former Rough Rider, has told her of the invitation to visit Oyster Bay, New York, this winter; and while that is not now to be, McIlhenny expresses her thanks.
