Theodore Roosevelt writes to Belle Roosevelt discussing Kermit Roosevelt’s work in the South American banking industry. Kermit is unhappy with his work and Roosevelt offers words of encouragement. Roosevelt also gives an update on the status of the family.

President Roosevelt agrees with all of John A. Sleicher’s letter except the suggestion about stumping, and he has asked Comptroller of Currency Lawrence O. Murray to contact Sleicher regarding the bank deposits. In a postscript, Roosevelt applauds New York Governor Charles Evans Hughes for his opening campaign speech in which he took aim at William Jennings Bryan.

President Roosevelt will send William H. Taft a copy of his letter to Representatives Henry C. Loudenslager and William Brown McKinley. He wonders if Taft has seen George W. Alger’s recent article on Taft, which Roosevelt believes should be widely circulated. Roosevelt agrees Taft should give a number of big speeches in several states and earnestly wants Taft’s personality to be more evident. Regarding Governor Charles Evans Hughes, Roosevelt still thinks he should be renominated. He discusses the guaranty of bank deposits but can offer no advice on the subject.

Netherland informs Roosevelt that Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt has deposited money into his account and passes along her message that he will need to limit his spending until March. He suggests filling out each check stub to avoid overdrawing the account in the future.

Douglas Robinson has followed William Loeb’s instructions by depositing $5,000.00 into President Roosevelt’s bank account. Robinson asks for Loeb’s help in securing Paul J. Corn a chance to take the examinations to become a second lieutenant. Corn comes recommended by his captain.

Lieutenant Scott from the USS Missouri reports on his landing team’s work in disaster relief in Kingston, Jamaica. The men under his command assisted in tearing down walls that had been made unstable, removing dead bodies from the rubble, and disinfecting streets and areas where the dead were found. The people of the city were deeply appreciative of their help.

Charles Evans Hughes believes that Buffalo is the “storm centre” as far as the Banking Department is concerned and that to be able to get a Republican who is highly esteemed in Buffalo and who will increase the efficiency of the administration, “is to solve a difficult problem, greatly to advantage the party and to benefit the state.” Hughes aims to offer Charles Hallam Keep the position, with the endorsement of John G. Wickser.

In a talk with Secretary of the Treasury Leslie M. Shaw, Shaw said he would like to know how William D. Murphy’s appointment would be regarded by the New York banks. Murphy notes that he will have letters sent by some of the banks, and he asks whether these should be sent to Shaw or to President Roosevelt.
