Letter from Edward North Buxton to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from Edward North Buxton to Theodore Roosevelt

Edward North Buxton advises President Roosevelt on things that he should consider while planning for his upcoming safari in Africa. He recommends that Roosevelt visit British East Africa rather than German East Africa, because Roosevelt would be more likely to get the game that he wants to hunt there. Buxton also advises Roosevelt on the gear that he should bring, including collapsible stools, tents, and guns. He offers to lend Roosevelt a camera if Kermit Roosevelt would like to practice photography and take pictures on the trip.

President Roosevet on British India

President Roosevet on British India

In a response to President Roosevelt’s complimentary speech on British rule in India, the author of this article affirms that Roosevelt’s praise is both prized and justified. The author claims that the British administration in India removed cruel rulers, “established the reign of law” in India, and “indoctrinated” Indians with “the learning and theories of the West.” The author concludes that British administration needs to continue to press for social reform in India, in order to “save” Indians.

Everybody’s Africa

In honor of President Roosevelt’s upcoming African safari, C. Bryson Taylor writes about the sights, conditions, hazards, and necessary supplies of a hunting trip in safari. Taylor details the guides, provisions, ammunition, and medicines travelers will need when embarking into the “dark and brooding heart” of Africa. Taylor also weaves in two fictional stories about previous hunting parties, which demonstrate the harshness of the expeditions.

Letter from Mason Mitchell to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from Mason Mitchell to Theodore Roosevelt

Mason Mitchell, U.S. consul in Zanzibar, used a leave of absence to visit Mount Kilimanjaro. His doctor had recommended a change of climate after an attack of malaria, and the trip did him good. He is sending President Roosevelt a box of mounted horns which are trophies from his hunting expeditions at Mount Kilimanjaro. He visits with Count Gustav von Götzen, Governor of German East Africa, and he hopes that the U.S. government will take action in a case involving U.S. citizen Dr. B. F. Wilson, who is living in Anjouan, an island in the Comoros.
