Presidential Snapshot (#31): Excerpt of a letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Clark Howell

President Roosevelt informs Clark Howell of Atlanta, Georgia, that he is surprised and disappointed at the reaction to some of his appointments for federal jobs in the South. Roosevelt says that he will not waver from his actions and that he will not “treat mere color as a permanent bar to holding office.” Roosevelt reminds Howell that he has appointed whites and Africa-Americans to positions in Georgia and South Carolina.

Drawn to inspire: Cartoonists’ perspectives on Theodore Roosevelt (#1)

Richard (Rick) Marschall examines a famous political cartoon from 1884 that features one of the earliest depictions of Theodore Roosevelt. Marschall focuses on Bernhard Gillam’s Phryne Before the Chicago Tribunal which depicts various leaders of the Republican Party pondering the political fate of James Gillespie Blaine, the eventual Republican nominee in the 1884 presidential contest. Marschall chronicles the highs and lows of Roosevelt’s life in 1884, and he identifies many of the prominent Republicans depicted in the cartoon which is based on the French painting Phryne Before the Areopagus. The political cartoon supplements the text.

An outdoor life well-considered

An outdoor life well-considered

Duane G. Jundt praises Michael R. Canfield for providing context for the development of Theodore Roosevelt as a naturalist and for a nuanced discussion of his hunting in Theodore Roosevelt in the Field. Jundt also praises Canfield for his exhaustive research and for his frequent use of examples from Roosevelt’s journals and notebooks to illustrate his work. Jundt indicates that the book plows familiar ground, and he faults Canfield for not providing maps to Roosevelt’s many outdoor adventures and for not discussing the importance of eyeglasses to Roosevelt’s development as a naturalist.

Five excerpts from Roosevelt’s natural history notebooks and journals, a photograph of Roosevelt, a letter, and the front cover of Canfield’s book populate the review. A text box with the mission statement of the Theodore Roosevelt Association appears at the end of the essay.

William N. Tilchin highlights some of the items in this issue of the Theodore Roosevelt Association Journal, including letters from two former presidents, George Bush and Theodore Roosevelt, and a focus on Michael Patrick Cullinane’s Theodore Roosevelt’s Ghost. Tilchin also notes how the Theodore Roosevelt Association is trying to negotiate the highly partisan political atmosphere in the nation and that it is a “nonpartisan” organization whose members are free to express their beliefs in a variety of forums.

Gregory A. Wynn writes that his criticisms of Michael Cullinane’s Theodore Roosevelt’s Ghost: The History and Memory of an American Icon amount to “merely quibbles,” and he states that it is thoroughly researched and well-written. Wynn highlights the work of Kathleen Dalton, Henry F. Pringle, and John A. Gable in his review, and he describes the wide ranging topics addressed by Cullinane, including the work of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) in safeguarding the memory of Theodore Roosevelt. Wynn notes that Cullinane’s work should serve as an inspiration to members of the TRA to continue the organization’s work.

Two photographs, including one of Cullinane, supplement the text.

E-mail interview of Michael Patrick Cullinane by Gregory A. Wynn

Gregory A. Wynn interviews the author of Theodore Roosevelt’s Ghost, Michael Patrick Cullinane. Cullinane describes his book as a work of historiography, and he addresses issues such as the efforts to memorialize Theodore Roosevelt that failed in the immediate years after his death. Cullinane also touches on the evolving reputation of American presidents, and he highlights the importance of the work of historians Henry F. Pringle and Elting Elmore Morison. Cullinane recommends that the Theodore Roosevelt Association continue to spend money on projects that further research on Roosevelt. A photograph of Wynn, Cullinane, and Tweed Roosevelt accompanies the text of the interview.

George H.W. Bush, Theodore Roosevelt, and the Theodore Roosevelt Association

This article consists of a letter written by former President George Bush to Shawn Thomas of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) in February 1993 as well as an introduction to the letter by William N. Tilchin. It also reprints the address and citation given on the occasion of conferring the Theodore Roosevelt Distinguished Service Medal to Bush on October 31, 1998, along with three photographs of Bush from prior issues of the Theodore Roosevelt Association Journal. In the five page hand-written letter, Bush writes that he admires Theodore Roosevelt’s love of the outdoors, his willingness to lead in politics and military service, and his ability to write, and he notes that having his grandchildren play at the White House made him think of Roosevelt.

Unveiling the “Yellowstone letters” written by U.S. Civil Service Commissioner Theodore Roosevelt, March 1894 – January 1895

The Theodore Roosevelt Association Journal (TRAJ) presents five letters written by Theodore Roosevelt in 1894-1895 to Captain George S. Anderson, the superintendent of Yellowstone National Park. In the letters, Roosevelt asks Anderson to write an essay about game protection in Yellowstone for a volume to be published by the Boone and Crockett Club. Roosevelt also discusses the prospects of passing a bill to protect the wildlife of the park; notes the capture of the buffalo poacher Edgar Howell; and informs Anderson that the Boone and Crockett Club would like to reimburse him for his expenses incurred in arresting Howell.

TRAJ editor William N. Tilchin provides an introduction to the letters which are supplemented by a letter from Colleen E. Curry of Yellowstone National Park and by five notes written by Anderson about the letters from Roosevelt. A photograph of Roosevelt in Yellowstone in 1903 accompanies Tilchin’s introduction.

Douglas Eden dismisses Stephen Kinzer’s The True Flag: Theodore Roosevelt, Mark Twain, and the Birth of the American Empire as a piece of polemical journalism that should not be taken seriously as a work of history. Eden asserts that the work will appeal to certain segments of the academy and media, and he highlights episodes from the early years of the Cold War to demonstrate the author’s bias and lack of understanding of key events of that era, such as the start of the Korean War. Eden also notes that despite appearing in the book’s title, Mark Twain does not figure prominently in the work. The front cover of the The True Flag and one of its photographs supplement the review.

In his review of the historical novel When Teddy Came to Town, Dave Friedrichs notes that the author, Tyler R. Tichelaar, combines fictional characters with real persons to tell the story of the 1913 trial held in Marquette, Michigan, that resulted from Theodore Roosevelt’s lawsuit against a local newspaper editor, George A. Newett. Friedrichs applauds Tichelaar for making extensive use of local history records, and he recommends the novel as “an engaging read.” Two photographs and the book’s front cover illustrate the review.
