Presidential Snapshot (#33): Excerpt of a letter from Theodore Roosevelt to John C. Spooner

Presidential Snapshot (#33): Excerpt of a letter from Theodore Roosevelt to John C. Spooner

President Roosevelt vents his frustration with the United States Senate in a letter to Senator Spooner of Wisconsin. Roosevelt concedes that the Senate has a right to amend treaties, but he believes that the amendments offered by the Senate in regard to a series of arbitration treaties are so drastic that they render the treaties worthless, and he admits that he may choose to withdraw them from consideration. On six occasions in the letter, Roosevelt pointedly claims that the Senate amendments will make the treaties “shams.”

Theodore Roosevelt, Edmund Morris, and History as Literature

Theodore Roosevelt, Edmund Morris, and History as Literature

William N. Tilchin discusses the significance of Edmund Morris’s three volume biography of Theodore Roosevelt on the heels of Morris’s death in May 2019. Tilchin cites a letter to him from John A. Gable, a former Executive Director of the Theodore Roosevelt Association (TRA) in which Gable claims that Morris’s The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt completely upended Roosevelt’s historical standing. Tilchin also quotes from Roosevelt’s address to the American Historical Association in 1912, and he asserts that Morris’s work meets Roosevelt’s challenge that good history should be well written and considered as literature. Tilchin’s essay serves as an introduction to a chapter from Morris’s second volume, Theodore Rex.

The covers of all three volumes of the Roosevelt trilogy join a photograph of Morris with Tweed Roosevelt, and an excerpt from Gable’s letter to Tilchin in illustrating the essay.

“The Most Just and Proper Revolution”

“The Most Just and Proper Revolution”

In a chapter titled “A Most Just and Proper Revolution,” taken from the second volume of his biography of Theodore Roosevelt, Theodore Rex, Edmund Morris details the machinations in Washington, D.C. and Panama that resulted in the revolution against Colombian rule on the Isthmus and the establishment of the independent nation of Panama. Morris describes the careful actions and words of administration figures like Roosevelt and Secretary of State John Hay, and he charts the movement of ships of the United States Navy sent in support of the insurrection. Morris adds to his Panama narrative interludes about the November 1903 elections in the United States, Roosevelt’s visit to Sagamore Hill, and his compilation of a reading list.

A Life in Letters

A Life in Letters

In his review of Theodore Roosevelt: A Literary Life, Joseph R. Ornig highlights the remarkable number of books written by and about Theodore Roosevelt, and he finds that the latest entry, a literary biography penned by Thomas Bailey and Katherine Joslin, fills a niche and reminds readers of Roosevelt’s impressive intellectual range. Ornig reviews the few other works that have addressed this topic, including his own, and he provides an overview of the careers of Bailey and Joslin. Ornig concludes his essay by reviewing the wide range of works produced by Roosevelt in the course of his writing career.

Four illustrations supplement the text, including a photograph of Roosevelt and the front cover of Theodore Roosevelt: A Literary Life.
