British Ambassador to the U.S. Julian Pauncefote encloses a dispatch highlighting the courageous conduct of Herbert G. Squiers and Reverend Francis D. Gamewell during the attack on the Legation quarter in Beijing during the Boxer rebellion and asks that the British Government’s appreciation be extended to them. Squiers was the Secretary of the U.S. Legation and Gamewell was the Methodist minister connected with the University of Peking.

John Prescott Nourse doubts he will have a chance of finding a descendent of Mary Vaughton. Nourse sends Governor Roosevelt a book, as well as two enclosures from a previous letter. Nourse also sends a story which he believes may evoke “a passing smile amidst the worries of public life.”

William J. Youngs forwards a message he received at Albany, New York, to Theodore Roosevelt at his home in Oyster Bay. F. V. Greene telegraphed that Robert C. Morris has been selected as Greene’s successor as president of the County Committee. Greene will explain to Roosevelt soon why this choice is particularly satisfactory.
