Letter from Endicott Peabody to Theodore Roosevelt

Endicott Peabody, founder of the Groton School, introduces Edward C. Carter, a Harvard alumnus who has been doing missionary work for the YMCA in India. Carter and Logan Herbert Roots, another Harvard alumnus who is a missionary in China, have a plan to increase the number of Harvard men doing missionary work. Carter and Roots would like President Roosevelt to lend his name to the advisory council.

The Great White Fleet, 1907-1909

James Buckheit provides a concise history of the voyage of the Great White Fleet from 1907 to 1909. He looks at President Roosevelt’s reasons for assembling and sending the Fleet with an emphasis on its visit to Japan. He notes the foreign policy achievements that stemmed from the Fleet’s trip, and he also describes the recruiting efforts the United States Navy undertook before the cruise to fill its ranks.

Letter from Adna Romanza Chaffee to William H. Taft

Army Chief of Staff Chaffee writes to Secretary of War Taft about adjunct duties assigned to military chaplains. Chaffee indicates that although chaplains generally do not mind if they are assigned additional duties, the regulations will be amended prohibiting their employment in positions other than dealing with the spiritual needs of military personnel. He also states that there have been concerns expressed about the Young Men’s Christian Association participating in the management of exchange buildings.

Letter from H. A. Maxwell to Theodore Roosevelt

H. A. Maxwell writes a note of condolence to Theodore Roosevelt after the death of his son Quentin Roosevelt. Maxwell met Quentin at the Issoudun aviation camp where Quentin was a “Y man,” and Maxwell shares a few fond anecdotes relating his good character. Maxwell did not have time to visit Quentin’s grave site in France.
