Wright, Wilbur, 1867-1912

While participating in the Missouri State Republican Party’s campaign on October 11, 1910, Theodore Roosevelt is invited to fly in a biplane with Archibald Hoxsey as pilot. Accompanied by Herbert S. Hadley, Governor of Missouri, and two men who appear to be Henry W. Kiel, Mayor of St. Louis, and Sheriff Louis Nolte, Roosevelt arrives in a motorcade at Kinloch Aviation Field. A man, who appears to be Hoxsey, inspects the plane. Medium shot of Roosevelt as he enters the passenger seat of the biplane; long shot of plane flying. Roosevelt alights from the plane, joins the waiting crowd, enters an automobile, and drives away in a motorcade. Roosevelt was the first president to experience flight.

Ambassador Jusserand forwards a letter from Colonel Olivier Mazel to President Roosevelt concerning Mazel’s opinion of American officers at the French School of Application for Cavalry. Jusserand knew John Emerich Edward Dalberg Acton but has not read the essays Roosevelt mentioned and will seek to obtain them. He comments on the Turkish revolution along with Wilbur Wright’s work in Le Mans, France. Jusserand wishes to be kindly remembered by the Roosevelt family.

In the context of President Jimmy Carter’s work negotiating a peace treaty between Egypt and Israel, William C. Sexton reviews President Theodore Roosevelt’s mediation of the Russo-Japanese War in 1905 and argues that Roosevelt’s actions set the table for future presidents to act as peacemakers. He looks at Roosevelt’s actions during the negotiations, reviews some of his administration’s other accomplishments, and says that advances in technology like those pioneered by the Wright brothers added to America’s power and prestige.
