Letter from Charles J. Bonaparte to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from Charles J. Bonaparte to Theodore Roosevelt

Attorney General Bonaparte wishes President Roosevelt a merry Christmas, and offers his opinion about how to proceed regarding the recent sentencing of Samuel Gompers. While Roosevelt has the power to pardon Gompers, Bonaparte says that to do so would be inappropriate while an appeal is pending, and so any requests for Roosevelt to pardon Gompers at this point would be premature. Bonaparte remarks confidentially that from his current understanding of the case, the sentences imposed by Judge Daniel Thew Wright are much too severe, even though he does not hold any sympathy for Gompers’s case.

Letter from Lyman Abbott to Theodore Roosevelt

Lyman Abbott writes to President Roosevelt regarding the recent judgements passed down by Ashley M. Gould and Daniel Thew Wright, of the Supreme Court of the District of Columbia in a case involving labor leader Samuel Gompers. Abbott thinks that Gould was correct in issuing an injunction, but is less certain about Wright’s actions. He believes that Roosevelt is correct to not interfere at this point.

Letter from Joseph Benson Foraker to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from Joseph Benson Foraker to Theodore Roosevelt

Senator Foraker endorses the appointment of Judge Daniel Thew Wright to United States District Court for the District of Columbia. Although Wright participated in a local “fusion” revolt from the Republican Party in 1897, even during the revolt, the fusionists supported the state and national Republican ticket. In addition, the revolt was so widespread as to indicate the real need for reform locally. Others who participated, including Nicholas Longworth, have since risen to high office within the party. President Roosevelt should have no hesitation in appointing Wright.

Alliance with George B. Cox designed for offensive and defensive work

Senator Hanna’s protest against the appointment of Judge Wright as judge of the District of Columbia indicates that Hanna’s alliance with George Barnsdale Cox is both offensive and defensive. Hanna will likely leave the Republican National Committee and focus on Ohio politics. The Hanna-Cox alliance will be a force in the realignment of Republican politics in Ohio.
