President Roosevelt tells Major General Wood that his recent letter impressed both Secretary of War William H. Taft and himself. Roosevelt is attempting to convince Congress to grant Wood the tract of land he desires at Fort McKinley, but he has a hard time convincing them on military matters. He informs the Major General that he will be stationed in the Philippines until after the elections when he will be brought back to America, and that Taft will visit the country in September.

General Wood needs to take a leave of absence to take his son home to the United States to put him into school at Groton Academy, and details his plans for travel during his absence. Wood encloses a response from Adjutant General Fred C. Ainsworth authorizing Wood’s return home. Wood is glad to continue on duty in the Philippines and considers it the best command in the service.

President Roosevelt updates his son Kermit on the goings-on at the White House, and his plans for the coming days. He and Edith had been riding regularly until it snowed, thawed, and froze. He hopes to play tennis with General Leonard Wood, Assistant Secretary of State Robert Bacon, and Secretary of the Interior James Rudolph Garfield, although the court may be too muddy. He recently took a “scramble walk” in Rock Creek Park with Representative Nicholas Longworth, Postmaster General George von Lengerke Meyer, Assistant Secretary of the Treasury Beekman Winthrop, and Ambassador Henry White. He had a dinner with African big game hunters, and wishes that Kermit could have met Sir Harry Johnston. His labor dinner is tomorrow night.

President Roosevelt and Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt were glad to hear from General Wood. Roosevelt is taking up the publication of Young’s letter, although he doubts if it will be worthwhile. He sends Wood a copy of a letter from Consul General of Cuba Frank Maximilian Steinhart and says he has asked Secretary of State Elihu Root to look into the matter. Roosevelt was pleased with Frank Ross McCoy’s “fine showing.”

President Roosevelt is shocked by the result of the election, particularly in carrying Missouri. Even though the campaign had been extremely dishonest in Roosevelt’s opinion, he still won by “such a landslide.” Roosevelt tells Major General Wood that he realizes he will have difficulties during the next four years, but at least there will not be “criminal blunders” regarding the Philippines, the Army and Navy, or foreign policy in general.
