Senator Ankeny wrote to President Roosevelt to confirm their conversation in regards to Chilean Ambassador Wilson. Ankeny stated he does not support Wilson being retained in the position and would like to nominate someone else.

President Roosevelt tells Secretary of State Hay that he cannot promise to be in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, over a year in advance because he does not know what the future holds. He also cannot meet with Hay after church on Sunday because he has to meet with some “railway people.” Finally, Roosevelt asks Hay’s advice about trying to send former U.S. Minister to Chile Henry Lane Wilson to Europe instead of back to Chile.

President Roosevelt shares his concerns about some of the members of the American diplomatic and consular service with Richard Harding Davis. Minister to Belgium Lawrence Townsend and Minister to Spain Arthur Sherburne Hardy are two examples of men who are the “pink-tea type,” hosting dinners instead of doing “hard work.” By contrast, Roosevelt admires Ambassador to Japan Lloyd Carpenter Griscom, Consul General to Egypt John Wallace Riddle, and Henry White. Roosevelt wants Davis to tell him about any men who are not doing their job, as the president wants to remove them when he makes changes on March 4.

Garfield goes on to point out how President Taft had surrendered the conservation fight when he appointed Walter L. Fisher as Secretary of the Interior. Garfield also comments how he finds the story of the granting of the terminals at Controller Bay curious, and he discusses a conversation he had with Ambassador Henry Lane Wilson about America’s actions in Mexico.

Senator Beveridge hopes that when President Roosevelt names David Jayne Hill as Ambassador to Germany he will assign Henry Lane Wilson to fill Hill’s vacated position as Ambassador to the Netherlands and name Beveridge’s brother-in-law Spencer F. Eddy as Ambassador to Belgium. Beveridge assures Roosevelt that he will approve of Eddy’s work. Beveridge also notes that Eddy’s mother is in poor health and would likely be heartened by the news of such an appointment.
