In a shooting match between France and Germany, a white bird labeled “Peace” has just been released from a trap labeled “Moroccan Situation” and the contestants are each waiting for the other to shoot first. Gathered around the shooting platform are rulers from European and Asian countries, including Uncle Sam, Edward VII, King of Great Britain, and Nicholas II, Emperor of Russia. Caption: If either one of them shoots, it is all off with the bird. Hunting and Shooting Number.

Worse than a boomerang

George A. Kessler & Company, American agents of Moët & Chandon, are advertising that Moët & Chandon champagne was used to christen the Meteor, Emperor William II’s yacht. This goes against the German Emperor’s instructions to use Schaumwein Rheingold champagne. The author believes that a “trick” was used to make the switch. In a handwritten note, it is suggested that a bribe given to one of President Roosevelt’s associates allowed the champagne switch.

This typed copy of a letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Eleanor Butler Roosevelt was included in a scrapbook. The letter describes a visit from a count bearing letters from the German embassy shortly after the outbreak of World War I. A note at the bottom of the scrapbook page stated that former president Roosevelt told this story to Eleanor, and she asked him to dictate it to his secretary. Instead, he wrote it out longhand himself.

Ambassador Tower informs Secretary of State Hay that the sealed letter from President Roosevelt to Emperor Wilhelm II has been delivered to Oswald Freiherr von Richthofen, Foreign Secretary and head of the Foreign Office. Tower has instructed von Richthofen that no record of the letter has been made at the embassy as it is personal.

Might makes right

The New York Sun asserts that the Republican nomination will go to President Roosevelt and that it has been his express intention to be elected to the presidency since he first took office following the assassination of President McKinley. The editorial describes Roosevelt as a politician who has disarmed all of his enemies by winning the public’s confidence, a feat he accomplished by “harrying the trusts,” “bringing wealth to its knees,” and putting organized labor “above the law and above the Constitution.” The editorial concludes by comparing Roosevelt to Germany’s William II and France’s Napoleon in his impact on the masses.

Emory C. White is an American businessman with interests in South America. He writes to inform President Roosevelt of the hostility of Germans in South America towards the United States. The Germans are only there to make money in South America and talk against the Americans, trying to trample the Monroe Doctrine. The prevailing opinion is that German trade will continue to increase and eventually lead to colonization, even if that leads to war with the South American republics and the United States. The German situation in Venezuela, with the Germans trying to get the payment of a debt, is only a means to increase German influence in the Americas.

Wallace Downey, president of Townsend Downey Shipbuilding Company, replies to William Emlen Roosevelt’s request for a statement concerning a controversy over the selection of wine used for the christening of German Emperor Wilhelm II’s yacht, The Meteor at Shooters Island, New York, on February 15, 1902. Downey reassures Roosevelt that Moët & Chandon was the bottle used at christening and no trickery was involved.
