Theodore Roosevelt enjoyed reading about Stewart Edward White’s adventure with the four lions and asks when White’s book is being published. Due to the government’s failure to make any military preparations, a movement is beginning to organize and train citizens for military service. Roosevelt has suggested that White serve on the advisory council. Americans “seem incapable of learning except by disaster.” Roosevelt has heard that Californians are supporting President Wilson because they want peace, but their policies towards Japanese immigration are most responsible for antagonizing Japan.

Novelist Stewart Edward White asks President Roosevelt for permission to travel with the battleship Maryland for the upcoming target practice run as he wants to observe shipboard routines closely. His naval officer relative, Charles Belknap, reports no objections among the ship’s senior officers regarding White’s request. White sends his two latest books for Roosevelt and the boys. Feeling Roosevelt will be interested, White also wants to submit a review of his impressions concerning military discipline in Yosemite Park. His wife, Elizabeth Colvert Grant White, asks that Roosevelt and Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt remember her.

He requests that a circular letter be sent to “all rangers, military commanders and park keepers” informing them that he is “a respectable member of society.” The adventure and travel writer, accompanied by his future wife and co-writer, Elizabeth “Betty” Grant, was planning a visit to national parks in the West.
