President Roosevelt apologizes to Edith Greenough Wendell for not being able to go to Jamestown Island to attend the Jamestown Church celebration. He is scheduled to be at the Exposition and the church is too far away to be able to make it on the day.

Lloyd Carpenter Griscom tells President Roosevelt that Professor Archibald Cary Coolidge is doing very good work in Paris, where he is meeting and discussing matters with French intellectuals. The French have felt a lack of “intellectual intimacy” with the United States, and Coolidge is doing “semi-diplomatic work” during his lectureship there.

President Roosevelt asks William Henry Grant, trustee of the Carnegie Institute, to consider John A. Lomax for a grant of $1,000 per year, for three years, to fund his research into “native ballads of the frontier.” This money would come from the Carnegie Fund.

President Roosevelt asks Robert S. Woodward, as president of the Carnegie Institution, to consider funding the research of John A. Lomax into “frontier ballads.” A grant of $1,000 per year for three years from the Carnegie Institute would suffice.

Robert Grant enjoyed meeting Baron Estournelles de Constant, though the baron could only spare a few minutes. Grant had a good impression of him and is pleased to entertain any friend of President Roosevelt’s. Grant also recently had dinner with Rooevelt’s son, Ted, and enjoyed reciting poetry with him.
