President Roosevelt writes to Archie Roosevelt that the New York plan is set with Dr. Oscar Carrabine. He tells Archie that winter in Washington, D.C., will be strange with no children around, but that it is good to have Ted Roosevelt there. During tennis a ball hit Roosevelt’s eye, making him stagger, but he continued the game. In a postscript Roosevelt says the dentist will instead come to Groton.

President Roosevelt believes that as the national capital, Washington, D.C., should be a model city in providing solutions for the social problems present in large cities. He thinks Charles Frederick Weller’s study will aid in identifying issues and suggesting solutions. The Homes Commission has been appointed to begin the same work in Washington, D.C. as it conducted in New York. Roosevelt appreciates Weller’s effective use of specific stories in his book instead of the usual, dull statistics. He feels Weller’s book provides a sympathetic understanding of these social problems.

He tells Kermit that he will come with him, provided he does not let it distract him from preparing for his future and will treat it as a college course. Roosevelt also updates his son on the activities of other members of the family.

Roosevelt tells Oliver to ask Baldwin to come to Washington, D.C., to meet with the president. He also informs Oliver that Secretary of War William H. Taft is visiting the Philippines on duty and therefore his expenses are covered while in official capacity. Roosevelt promises to carefully review the circumstances before any vouchers are approved.

Roosevelt encourages Llewellyn to tell New Mexico Governor George Curry the case and have him meet the president in Saint Louis, Missouri. Afterwards, Roosevelt would like Llewellyn to meet with him and Judge Alford Warriner Cooley in Washington, D.C.
