President Roosevelt hopes F. V. Greene’s wife will enjoy her brief trip to Europe and wishes Walter W. Warwick will travel to Manila soon. Roosevelt discusses his efforts in bringing about the peace conference to end the Russo-Japanese War and says that although it is a great success and he is being broadly praised, he is sure that by next year, new issues will have arisen, and he will be attacked in the press.

William Austin Wadsworth apologizes for not replying to President Roosevelt sooner, but he could not as he was helping care for his son, who had been sick. Wadsworth is going to New York tomorrow and would like to visit Roosevelt when convenient. He read in the paper that Roosevelt supports renominating Governor Charles Evans Hughes.

Theodore Roosevelt expects Justice Charles Evans Hughes Hughes to be the Republican presidential candidate because no one knows Hughes’s position on any issue. Hughes is a capable man but Roosevelt is unsure if Hughes can be a war leader. Roosevelt does not consider himself a legitimate candidate but will give Representative Wadsworth’s check to George W. Perkins for the campaign. Perkins is placing advertisements on Roosevelt’s record in as many newspapers as possible.
