Theodore Roosevelt was pleased by Father Curran’s letter and greatly appreciates his friendship. If he had been president, Roosevelt would have sent Father Vattmann to investigate the Mexico situation and acted upon his report. He was interested to hear from Archbishop Blenk that the general opinion was changing in support of his actions during the “Vatican incident.”

President Roosevelt was not surprised by Bishop Rooker’s letter since he had already heard of the conflict between Rooker and the Filipinos, as well as the American government officials. Many people have contradicted what Rooker said and Roosevelt hopes that the Catholic prelates in the Philippines can convince the Filipinos that they are their friends and not their enemies like the friars who preceded them. Roosevelt has taken steps to create a special tribunal regarding the Aglipayan quarrel, disregards Rooker’s “groundless” claims against Commissioner Smith and is committed to increasing Filipino independence.

R. Cruzen as Collector of Customs. Should Elliott be chosen, and Regis Henri Post replaces Elliott, everyone agrees that Edward S. Wilson should be made auditor.

Theodore Roosevelt praises the Armed Forces and veterans of the Civil War. He also praises Father Edward Vattmann and other speakers of the evening as proud examples of loyal Americans with German ancestry. He calls for all of the various ethnic groups in America to come together under one language and one flag and condemns pacifists and anti-war politicians like Senator Robert M. La Follette. Roosevelt says all able-bodied men should join the fight and that America needs to be better prepared for war in the future.
