Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Henry Cabot Lodge

President Roosevelt thanks Senator Lodge for sending the piece from Baron F. A. Channing, which he will quote. It is apparent that Roosevelt’s Provincetown speech did not make matters worse, as the Sun, Times, and Evening Post had said it would. An expert has recently confirmed for Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt that only Grace Wilson Vanderbilt and Senator John Kean have comparable Madeira cellars. Roosevelt also includes a quote from Secretary of War William H. Taft praising Lodge’s speech.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Kermit Roosevelt

Theodore Roosevelt writes his son Kermit to give him updates on members of the family and thank him for gifts he and his wife Belle sent. Roosevelt says he has received many interesting letters and he would send them to Kermit but fears they will get lost. Roosevelt discusses making a speech at the Opera House to raise money for the unemployed and notes his fondness for Grace Vanderbilt. Roosevelt adds that he has had a small bout of fever.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Frances Kellor

Theodore Roosevelt informs Frances Kellor that he has received the book she sent and will read it. Roosevelt is irritated that various newspapers did not cover his comments about Kellor’s work as part of the Bundle Day Committee of New York City, even though he dictated remarks to fifteen or twenty reporters.

Letter from Whitelaw Reid to Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt

Ambassador Reid writes to Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt about events in England following news of the death of Secretary of State John Hay, including the Fourth of July reception held by the embassy there. Reid shares information about the Kings of England and Spain and hopes that she will share the news with President Roosevelt. Reid also expresses some nervousness about speeches being printed verbatim in Europe, and remarks about the volume of speeches he is asked to give. He includes several songs that were sung at gatherings he attended.
