President Roosevelt sends Kermit Roosevelt a poem that reminds him of Quentin, as well as letters relating to his upcoming African safari. He tells Kermit that he will come with him, provided he does not let it distract him from preparing for his future and will treat it as a college course. Roosevelt also updates his son on the activities of other members of the family.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Kermit Roosevelt

President Roosevelt congratulates his son Kermit on his grades. Roosevelt is sorry for Archie, as he tries very hard, but his grades are not very good. He describes a walk he recently took with Fitzhugh Lee, John McIlhenny, and Cecil Andrew Lyon. Douglas Robinson and Corinne Roosevelt Robinson are currently visiting and having a nice time. They are disappointed that Stewart Douglas Robinson has been expelled from Harvard.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to John Biddle

President Roosevelt complains against a plan that is moving forward to change the woodland footpaths in Rock Creek Park into stone sidewalks. Roosevelt believes that stone will detract from the beauty of the park and if someone wants to walk on pavement they can stay in the city.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to John Biddle

President and Edith Roosevelt want a “beautiful purple beech in the Pierce’s Mill meadow” in Rock Creek to be preserved and nothing has been done in the past month. The creek is eating away at the bank near the tree and Roosevelt wants a flood wall built to ensure the tree’s preservation.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Leonard Wood

President Roosevelt tasks Colonel Wood to take Henry Pinckney, the White House’s African American steward, to Rock Creek and show him where Roosevelt lost his ring. Pinckney should then advertise that the President has lost a ring and offer $25 for the ring’s return.

Roosevelt is enamored with Washington, D.C., and with his wife Edith Roosevelt, who delights in an unusual variety of activities there. As the election approaches, Roosevelt reflects on his legacy and the importance of his work in office and in life.
