Letter from Kentarō Kaneko to Theodore Roosevelt

Kentarō Kaneko reports to President Roosevelt about a very well-attended meeting of the America’s Friend Society. The Society is composed of all the Japanese who studied or resided in the United States. The Society is responsible for erecting the monument to commemorate the landing of Matthew Perry in Kurikama. Kaneko thinks the meeting was called in appreciation of the success of Roosevelt’s peace making policy.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Anna Roosevelt Cowles

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to John Elliot Pillsbury

President Roosevelt asks Acting Chief of the Bureau of Navigation Pillsbury to consider what the U.S. Navy should do if the Asiatic squadron needs to “bottle up” the Vladivostok squadron. Roosevelt does not expect trouble from Russia but wants to be prepared for an emergency.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to William E. Chandler

Assistant Secretary of the Navy Roosevelt gave William E. Chandler’s letter to Secretary of the Navy John Davis Long. He strongly advises against putting the commodore in command of a squadron. Roosevelt has been trying to get George Dewey the command of the Asiatic Squadron. He has given considerable thought to building up the navy and can write a memorandum to Chandler on the matter.
