Letter from T. Louis Comparette to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from T. Louis Comparette to Theodore Roosevelt

T. Louis Comparette, curator at the Philadelphia Mint, would like to add a medal designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens commemorating Theodore Roosevelt’s inauguration to the National Collection of Coins and Medals. He believes that the dies are in possession of the Tiffany Company, but is unsure who has the rights to them. He asks if Roosevelt would be able to secure permission for one or two bronze casts to be made. If Tiffany does not hold the rights to the die, Comparette wonders if ownership could be transferred to the national collection.

Letter from D. B. Fairley to Theodore Roosevelt

Colorado State Republican Chairman Fairley regrets to inform President Roosevelt that Francis Mott Downer and Frank W. Howbert helped the “machine” cross Philip Battell Stewart during Republican nominations for the Colorado Supreme Court. Stewart agreed to be nominated only if the Court was not “loaded.” Stewart withdrew his nomination after William H. Gabbert was nominated instead. Fairley discloses that John F. Edith’s gold coin

Edith’s gold coin

Michael F. Moran describes the process of choosing designs for a gold coin of Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt to be issued by the United States Mint. Moran details his selection for the relevant committee, and he notes how he brought his expertise on coins and the Roosevelts to bear on his work. Moran describes the many steps and approvals needed over the course of two years to agree on a design and designers, and he notes that he used Sylvia Jukes Morris’s biography of Roosevelt as a reference to guide his and the committee’s work. In the end, the committee chose an obverse design that was based on Theodore Roosevelt’s favorite photograph of his wife, and the reverse image highlights the restoration of the White House undertaken in 1902.

In addition to photographs of Moran and Edith Roosevelt, illustrations of the proposed and winning designs for both sides of the coin and bronze medal accompany the essay. A text box contains information on how to order the coin.

Memorandum from Henry F. Greene to Theodore Roosevelt

Memorandum from Henry F. Greene to Theodore Roosevelt

As requested by President Roosevelt, Civil Service Commissioner Greene submits a memorandum regarding the conditions at the United States Mint in Philadelphia. Greene describes the recent removal of five employees and attributes their removal to their association with the Democratic Party. As an example, Greene writes of the removal of Francis P. Rodden, his appeal to Superintendent Charles B. Landis, and his immediate replacement by Republican Party worker Stephen Frisby. Greene mentions inspections led by past commissioners William Dudley Foulke, Frank M. Kiggins, and Alford Warriner Cooley, and requests that the United States Treasury Department reinstate the five men illegally removed from their positions.
