Letter from Charles J. Bonaparte to Theodore Roosevelt

Charles J. Bonaparte sends President Roosevelt his resignation as Indian Commissioner. He allowed his name to be put on Maryland’s ballot as an elector for the upcoming presidential election without considering that he held office, and believes it would be simpler to resign his office than change the ticket, as doing that may be misconstrued. Bonaparte also has resigned from auxiliary positions in other cabinet departments to be safe, although he does not believe these technically count as official positions. He hopes to be able to cast his electoral vote for Roosevelt, but he believes that Roosevelt will be victorious in the election even if he does not carry Maryland.

Letter from Richard F. Pettigrew to Theodore Roosevelt

Senator Richard F. Pettigrew writes to Theodore Roosevelt after a previous conversation in which Roosevelt suggested to appoint James Wilson as Secretary of the Interior. In this letter, Pettigrew argues that Wilson is an excellent Secretary of Agriculture and that he should not change office.

President Roosevelt, in light of a confidential report, feels that Summers cannot be reappointed as district attorney, and perhaps ought to be removed. TR park wilderness proposal stirs protest

The Forum of Fargo-Moorhead reports that locals are irate over a Department of Interior proposal to designate additional areas of Theodore Roosevelt National Memorial Park as wilderness. Interested parties in the community worry that enlargement of the wilderness area, particularly in the North Unit, will discourage the development of tourist attractions.The proposed change would raise the number of wilderness acres to well over 75% of the territory in the North Unit.

Completion record for job #285 named “Excavating Slide.” The job was to remove a section of a slumping butte threatening to damage the park road within the southern unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park in western North Dakota. Project removed about 5500 cubic feet of earth from the slump along the east entrance road.

Memorandum from Marion Clawson to Julius A. Krug
