Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to John Appleton Stewart

President Roosevelt tells John Appleton Stewart that he supports the movement about which Stewart wrote, which addresses the needs of people in agricultural areas and small towns. Several states in the East are neglecting their duty to their country districts. The United States Department of Agriculture will do what it can, and Roosevelt will cooperate with the Chamber of Commerce in Syracuse or other interested groups. (The Chamber called a conference that fall to study conditions in the rural areas of New York.)

Letter from James Wilson to William Loeb

Secretary of Agriculture Wilson explains that the Department of Agriculture promoted planting a kind of wheat that needed little rain in the semi-arid west. Farmers are planting it and bringing it to millers in Minnesota and Iowa, and the millers are complaining because this grain is damaging their machinery. Though Wilson met with the millers, they continue to complain about the introduction of a new grain in their “millers’ paper.”

Completion record for Civilian Conservation Corps job #40

The Civilian Conservation Corps job record #40 is in regard to construction of a sixth mile of park road in the northern unit of the Roosevelt Recreational Demonstration Area (SP-7) in western North Dakota. A section of this project will cross in U.S. Department of Agriculture land and an easement is necessary. A great number of documents are related to obtaining an easement, but also include technical and job documentation.
