A Rough Rider on his bronco

“Teddy” Roosevelt spurs a bucking horse which is branded “Rough Riders” on its right hip, while Thomas Collier Platt looks on from behind a wall. Roosevelt’s lariat forms the phrase “Nomination for Governor.” The caption reads: Uncle Tom Platt – “My, What stunts! I wish that fellow would stop. He makes me awful nervous.”

Comments and Context

This issue of Punch is dated 11 days after Roosevelt ascended to the presidency on the death of William McKinley. Bernard Partridge was the major cartoonist of the famed London, England, weekly following Sir John Tenniel, who was also famous as the illustrator of the Lewis Carroll Alice books. Partridge, who was also an actor, was active with Punch through both World Wars.

Congressman Fleming responds to Colonel Bacon’s statement that disputes President Roosevelt’s actions in the Battle of San Juan Hill. While in the Massachusetts General Hospital in 1898, Fleming spoke to wounded soldier from the Rough Riders regiment who recounted the battle and his experience with Roosevelt.
