Letter from Secretary of Theodore Roosevelt to Arthur L. Lynn

Letter from Secretary of Theodore Roosevelt to Arthur L. Lynn

Theodore Roosevelt’s secretary is sure that Arthur L. Lynn is mistaken in believing that Roosevelt expressed his approval for the “business” of Montgomery Ward & Co. in Africa in his address to the Union League Club of Chicago. Roosevelt did not refer to this firm, nor would he give his permission to Lynn to do as Lynn suggests.

Letter from Bernard E. Sunny to Theodore Roosevelt

Bernard E. Sunny sends Theodore Roosevelt the honorarium from his visiting the Union League Club in Chicago on Washington’s birthday, and asks if Frank Harper would be able to send the expense account for Roosevelt’s trip so that they can pay that as well. Letter from Bernard E. Sunny to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from Bernard E. Sunny to Theodore Roosevelt

Bernard E. Sunny, a member of the Union League Club of Chicago, conveys a request from Lewis K. Torbet asking whether it would be possible for Theodore Roosevelt to deliver an address to the Daughters of the American Revolution when he is in Chicago. Sunny provides an overview of the full day of events the Union League Club already has scheduled, but acknowledges Roosevelt’s “facility for crowding a good deal into a little space,” and says the club will do its best to accommodate any outside requests Roosevelt decides to accept.

Letter from William Dudley Foulke to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from William Dudley Foulke to Theodore Roosevelt

William Dudley Foulke recently gave a speech condemning libel in the press. Foulke shares that people respond enthusiastically to President Roosevelt’s name in the middle west. Uncharacteristically, according to his own perceptions of their correspondence, he commends Roosevelt for an excellent run as president rather than sharing distressing news.

Letter from Joseph Gurney Cannon to Leslie M. Shaw

Letter from Joseph Gurney Cannon to Leslie M. Shaw

Speaker Joseph Gurney Cannon informs Secretary of the Treasury Shaw that he has no designs on running for President and has discouraged those promoting his candidacy; his focus is solely on the upcoming midterm elections. Cannon recounts a conversation with men from the Manufacturers of Agricultural Implements League in which he urged them not to believe the promises of the Democratic Party with regard to tariff revision. He hopes that President Roosevelt’s letter on the matter, which is due for imminent release, will help to sway their opinions.

Theodore Roosevelt and the Union League Club of Chicago

Theodore Roosevelt and the Union League Club of Chicago

David L. Kohn recalls Theodore Roosevelt’s visits to Chicago, Illinois, in 1896 and 1911. He mentions the first and dwells on the second, highlighting and quoting extensively from each of the four speeches Roosevelt made on February 22, 1911, ending with a speech at the Union League Club of Chicago. Kohn notes the venue and audience for each address which included speeches to young people and first generation Americans. The speeches covered typical themes for Roosevelt such as patriotism, the duties of citizenship, and reverence for the past. Kohn also provides a history of the Union League Club of Chicago.

Photographs of Kohn and Roosevelt accompany the article as do photographs of two letters and a ledger entry.
