Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Theodore Roosevelt

President Roosevelt would like his son Ted to use the best ankle support possible, perhaps even putting the ankle in plaster for a few weeks. Harvard did better against Yale then expected but “lack of proper coaching” and fumbles lost them the game. If Ted is ready for a good history of the American Revolution, President Roosevelt could lend his copy of Sir George Otto Trevelyan’s book.

Letter from George Haven Putnam to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from George Haven Putnam to Theodore Roosevelt

George Haven Putnam sends President Roosevelt a book on American history, which he considers an original, striking, and valuable contribution to the field. Putnam compares the author, Oliver, to George Otto Trevelyan in the sense that both are able to study American history with full freedom from the local prejudices characteristic of other British authors, although Putnam thinks Oliver is more critical than Trevelyan.

Letter from Henry White to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from Henry White to Theodore Roosevelt

Ambassador to Italy Henry White thanks President Roosevelt for appointing him to attend the Algeciras Conference on behalf of the United States. An associate wrote him that his coadjutor, Ambassador Samuel R. Gummere, may prefer German to French influence in Morocco. White relates his Thanksgiving experiences hosting Lord and Lady Trevelyan and visiting American Episcopal, Methodist, and Catholic celebrations in Rome. White anticipates a collapse of the ministry in Italy soon, or at least a reorganization, owing to a customs arrangement with Spain which is unfavorable to the Italian wine industry. White wishes Theodore Roosevelt Jr. a speedy recovery from a football injury.

Gregory A. Wynn discusses the origins of his hobby of collecting items related to Theodore Roosevelt, and he uses this as an introduction to examine a letter from Theodore Roosevelt to George Otto Trevelyan which had not been previously known or published. Wynn highlights the sensitive nature of the letter’s contents as it reveals Roosevelt’s thoughts and actions during a number of diplomatic crises during his presidency. Wynn also notes how the Trevelyan letter was shared with and was part of Roosevelt’s correspondence with his friend David Gray. Wynn asserts that the letters provide a “revealing snapshot of presidential statecraft.”

A postcard and a dinner program from Wynn’s collection appear in the article along with a photograph of Roosevelt with Trevelyan and his son George Macaulay Trevelyan.
