President Roosevelt sends George Otto Trevelyan a copy of his message to Congress, and speaks of some of the accomplishments of his administration in improving the financial situation of the United States government. Roosevelt would be pleased to visit Trevelyan when he comes to England. He heartily approves of Trevelyan’s speech, and has shared it with Senator Henry Cabot Lodge and Anna Cabot Mills Lodge. Roosevelt discusses his preferences for translations of classical works, and finds himself in agreement with Trevelyan in many respects. He relates a story of a recent encounter he had with Simon Bolivar Buckner at the White House, and closes by mentioning a number of other men who were named after famous historical personages.

George Otto Trevelyan takes great pleasure in Theodore Roosevelt’s letters and prizes each one he receives. He comments on current politics in Great Britain. Recently, he and his wife, Caroline Philips Trevelyan, vacationed in the Swiss Alps and delighted in the landscape. His son George Macaulay Trevelyan’s new volume will be published in September, and his Parliamentarian son, Charles Philips Trevelyan, will be glad to hear from Roosevelt. Trevelyan sends his regards to Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt and the family.

George Otto Trevelyan was pleased to read President Roosevelt’s letter on president-elect William H. Taft’s religious opinions because Trevelyan’s wife Caroline is a also Unitarian. He outlines the history of her family’s becoming Unitarians, and notes that Unitarians used to be politically popular in Leeds. Trevelyan also notes that his son Charles, who Roosevelt had previously been very kind to, has been made Parliamentary Secretary for Education.

Ambassador to France Henry White expresses regret that President Roosevelt was unable to secure funding from Congress for the construction of four battleships. He praises Roosevelt’s handling of the controversy surrounding German Emperor William II’s dislike of the new American Ambassador to Germany, David Jayne Hill. White also offers his assessment of H. H. Asquith, the new British Prime Minister, and updates Roosevelt on the Trevelyans, with whom he recently dined. Includes handwritten original and typed copy.

Ambassador to Italy Henry White thanks President Roosevelt for appointing him to attend the Algeciras Conference on behalf of the United States. An associate wrote him that his coadjutor, Ambassador Samuel R. Gummere, may prefer German to French influence in Morocco. White relates his Thanksgiving experiences hosting Lord and Lady Trevelyan and visiting American Episcopal, Methodist, and Catholic celebrations in Rome. White anticipates a collapse of the ministry in Italy soon, or at least a reorganization, owing to a customs arrangement with Spain which is unfavorable to the Italian wine industry. White wishes Theodore Roosevelt Jr. a speedy recovery from a football injury.

George Otto Trevelyan thanks President Roosevelt for his letter, which was praised by his son Charles Philips Trevelyan. Trevelyan has been following newspaper accounts of Roosevelt’s role in dealing with Russia, and laments the problems that beset the late British Prime Minister W. E. Gladstone. He is glad that Roosevelt does not have to deal with similar problems. Trevelyan sends Roosevelt a book about the 1857 mutiny in India.

He will update Roosevelt and Secretary of State Root by cipher when matters involving the conference develop. White describes his social events on Thanksgiving Day, including a Thanksgiving dinner where he hosted George Otto Trevelyan, who was very pleased to attend and spoke highly of Roosevelt.
