One such problem is that the leaders of the Republican Party in New England are really the heirs of the Tory Party, while only the Progressive Party can really be considered the spiritual heirs of Lincoln and the original Republican Party.

Theodore Roosevelt sends his thanks and acknowledgments to George Otto Trevelyan. Roosevelt sends along copies of two of his speeches so that Trevelyan can see what Roosevelt actually said. Roosevelt thoroughly enjoyed Trevelyan’s last volume and feels that the reactionaries in the United States are just as bad as England’s.

President Roosevelt wants Secretary of State Root to inform the British Embassy of the poor journalistic practices of Maurice A. Low, who represents “the very worst type of the yellow journalism.” Roosevelt would like to know whether David Jayne Hill can be appointed delegate to the upcoming Hague Convention.

James Bryce regrets not responding to Commissioner Roosevelt’s letter sooner. He comments on the likely outcome of the upcoming elections in England. Bryce also notes that the issue of the Minneapolis Convention is “rather tragic” for James Gillespie Blaine.
