Theodore Roosevelt’s secretary assures Montaville Flowers that Roosevelt does not use tobacco and uses very little alcohol. The secretary writes that if people knew Roosevelt better they would be aware of his lovable nature and fine qualities. At Roosevelt’s request, the secretary has enclosed two pertinent letters.

James M. Davis tells Theodore Roosevelt that forty boys are soon joining a Boy Scout troop and hopes Roosevelt will write a message of “greeting and advice,” particularly if he could make comment on “profanity and the use of tobacco.”

Archibald W. Conklin asks Theodore Roosevelt’s secretary if Roosevelt smokes. He does not think Roosevelt seems like a smoker.

Paul Joseph Dashiell sends Theodore Roosevelt a pouch of “larb,” which Native Americans sometimes smoke in place of tobacco. He says that mixed with tobacco, it tastes and smells like campfire smoke. The pouch used to belong to W. Hallett Phillips. Dashiell thinks that Roosevelt will appreciate the pouch, because he appreciates the West.
