Live interviews. XXI. Free hides and shoes

John F. Tobin, President of the Book and Shoe Workers Union, and other leaders of the union, discuss the proposal to eliminate the duty on hides, from which shoes are made. Tobin argues that removing the tariff would reduce the cost of leather, allowing manufacturers greater margin to raise employees’ wages, to keep pace with the cost of living. Others support the removal of the duty on leather but not on finished shoes and boots.

Letter from Joseph Gurney Cannon to Leslie M. Shaw

Letter from Joseph Gurney Cannon to Leslie M. Shaw

Speaker Joseph Gurney Cannon informs Secretary of the Treasury Shaw that he has no designs on running for President and has discouraged those promoting his candidacy; his focus is solely on the upcoming midterm elections. Cannon recounts a conversation with men from the Manufacturers of Agricultural Implements League in which he urged them not to believe the promises of the Democratic Party with regard to tariff revision. He hopes that President Roosevelt’s letter on the matter, which is due for imminent release, will help to sway their opinions.

Letter from the Tariff Committee to the Executive Committee of the National Association for Agricultural Implement and Vehicle Manufacturers

The Tariff Committee sends their report on the effect of tariffs on their industry to the Executive Committee. The Tariff Committee states the tariffs on cattle hides, steel, and lumber are the most detrimental to their business as well as unnecessary for the continued success of the supplying industries. The Tariff Committee recommends removing trusts and tariffs and working to secure reciprocity on these goods with Canada. The Tariff Committee believes these measures are vital to protecting American manufacturing and the American wage.
