President Roosevelt affirms his strong support for the Massachusetts Republican ticket, and advises Senator Lodge on how to respond to a statement from Henry Melville Whitney that misrepresents Roosevelt’s feelings on trade reciprocity with Canada. Roosevelt believes that it will do no good for him personally to make a statement, but approves of Lodge’s plan of publicly affirming Roosevelt’s support of the Republican ticket and stating that the Senators from Massachusetts have always agreed with him on reciprocity and that Roosevelt’s views on the matter have never changed.

Senator Lodge has discovered that Massachusetts District Attorney John B. Moran’s investigation into the Massachusetts State Committee is politically motivated, as Moran intends to run for governor. In particular Moran is investigating Thomas Talbot and Assistant Secretary of the Treasury James B. Reynolds. Lodge wants President Roosevelt to have the facts before Reynolds visits Roosevelt. Lodge complains that Moran does not investigate Democrats.

Henry Cabot Lodge encloses a letter from Thomas Talbot to President Roosevelt and would like to publish Roosevelt’s response. Henry Melville Whitney claims that President Roosevelt told him in private conversation that he opposed Cabot and Talbot, and Cabot asks the President to publish a denial, or at least to give him or Talbot authority to do so.
