Theodore Roosevelt provides a detailed description of one day of college life, particularly last Monday. There is a lot of class and studying but also boxing, dinner with the Tudors, and a window broken by a baseball. Roosevelt has been going out a lot but will focus on his examinations in a few weeks. He plans on collecting bird specimens in the spring and will be traveling to the Adirondacks with H. D. Minot. He requests that his gun and collecting supplies be sent. Roosevelt has been enjoying his Sunday school class and his library has been the “greatest possible pleasure.”

Theodore Roosevelt appreciates the many letters he has received from home. He also received a letter from his uncle, James Dunwody Bulloch. Roosevelt has kept his father’s first letter and will try to deserve his trust. He has not found it difficult to avoid drinking and smoking. Roosevelt requests a petition that will allow him to attend the local Congregational church and join a mission class. Initial college expenses have been heavy, but Roosevelt should not need to draw on his father’s finances until Christmas.

Theodore Roosevelt requests Martha Bulloch Roosevelt send personal items (silk hat and rubbers). Roosevelt relates he is working and socializing “a good deal.” He also expresses dismay about being asked to resign from the Sunday school class he had for three years because he declined to join the Episcopal Church.

Theodore Roosevelt reached Cambridge, Massachusetts, in “capital health and spirits.” He officiated at the athletic meeting and joined the Porcellian Club. The Sunday school was disorganized but the boys were happy to see him. Roosevelt would like Elliott Roosevelt to send the number for the shoemaker on Broadway.

The family misses Martha Bulloch Roosevelt but everyone is well. Five boys visited last Saturday and they had a beautiful time. They were noisy but did not break anything. During Sunday school, everyone laughed at the biblical story of Job’s comforters, whom Anna Roosevelt called “scallawags.”
