Historian Chester L. Brooks was interested in the information from Major Anders which contradicts Ray W. Lingk’s belief that the Sully Expedition traveled a southerly route near Flat Top Butte. He also received some photographs that show Major Bell’s 1880 camp near Sentinel Butte which may help locate the camp.

Dana Wright is planning a trip from Fort Rice to study Sully Trail and hopes to stop in Medora, North Dakota. He has visited several sites in southern North Dakota and is anxious to examine the Little Missouri River between Sully Creek and Custer Wash as he is puzzled by the trail in this area.

Harmon Olstad found some old army cartridges northeast of Square Top Butte which may help corroborate Historian Chester L. Brooks’s findings that General Sully’s skirmish was near the water hole east of the butte.

Dana Wright camped near the Diamond C Ranch to study the Sully battlefield near Killdeer Mountain. The owner agreed to donate an acre for the placement of a marker. Wright is currently in the hospital with a jaw problem.
