Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Leigh S. J. Hunt

President Roosevelt is “overjoyed” to hear that Leigh S. J. Hunt’s son, Henry L. Hunt, has improved in health and discusses his Nile river travel plans for his upcoming African safari. Based on the advice of the Sirdar and John L. Harrington, Roosevelt plans to travel up the Sobat and Pibor rivers instead of the Bahr-el-Gazal. Roosevelt also reports that the Sirdar claims he can catch a white rhinoceros while in Uganda. In the postscript, Roosevelt wonders if they should bring donkeys on their river journey.

Letter from Edmund Heller to Theodore Roosevelt

Edmund Heller assures President Roosevelt that he has not given out any statements on what they will be doing during their African expedition. Heller has found little information on the plants and animals of Africa in his research. He believes Roosevelt’s party will bring back more zoological material and information than any other expedition has ever obtained on East Africa.

Letter from John L. Harrington to Theodore Roosevelt

John L. Harrington writes to President Roosevelt to follow up on a conversation they had at a recent lunch, and gives Roosevelt some details about a journey on the Upper Nile that he took in 1904. Harrington has already been making some arrangements for Roosevelt to be able to hunt during this leg of the journey. He appends a copy of a map of the region to the letter for Roosevelt to look at.

Letter from Edward North Buxton to Theodore Roosevelt

Edward North Buxton is pleased that President Roosevelt is beginning to get excited about his coming trip to Africa. He discusses recommendations for the timing and route of the trip, and mentions people who may help along the way. Buxton is also pleased to hear that Secretary of War William H. Taft will likely become the Republican nominee. He encloses an article by Winston Churchill.

Letter from Frederick Courteney Selous to Theodore Roosevelt

Frederick Courteney Selous provides President Roosevelt with information that will give insight into the cost and planning of his hunting trip to Africa. He advises on the time of year to travel, the route he should take, the supplies he should need and outfitter he should use, as well as the costs of hunting licenses, supplies, and travel.

Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Anna Roosevelt Cowles

Theodore Roosevelt is on an extended trip in the upper Nile region with his son Kermit Roosevelt. He describes the native people, a variety of wildlife, and the big game and birds they are hunting on safari. Kermit’s health is excellent and Roosevelt is pleased at the quality of his own health during their nine-month excursion in Africa. Recently he received a telegram notifying him that Gifford Pinchot had been dismissed as head of the United States Forest Service, which Roosevelt found surprising. He looks forward to seeing his wife Edith Roosevelt.
