Letter from Myron T. Herrick to Theodore Roosevelt

Letter from Myron T. Herrick to Theodore Roosevelt

Myron T. Herrick once again expresses his thanks for the “privilege of participating” in the first White House Conference on the Care of Dependent Children, which was a credit to President Roosevelt. Herrick has been thinking about their earlier communications on his potential expectation of a Cabinet position. He had mentioned that some people objected to the idea of his appointment because of his business connections. Herrick wants to clarify that no such conflict of interest actually exists.

Three monuments

On either side of a broad street, “Vanderbilt’s Palace” and the “Cooper Institute to Science and Art” appear. In the distance is “Stewart’s Cathedral” (the Cathedral of the Incarnation, built as a memorial and mausoleum for Garden City’s founder Alexander Turney Stewart). Symbols of wealth frame the left side and symbols of art and science frame the right side. Puck is seated at center, over a quote by Joaquin Miller: “For all you can hold in your cold dead hand is what you have given away.”

Shade of A.T.S.– “Oh, if I could only find my body!”

Shade of A.T.S.– “Oh, if I could only find my body!”

Print shows the spirit of Alexander Turney Stewart pulling out his hair as Henry Hilton posts “For Sale” notices on Stewart’s commercial enterprises, including the “Grand Union Hotel,” the “Windsor Hotel,” the “Woman’s Park Hotel,” the “Chicago House,” Stewart’s Garden City,” and his main building at “10th St. & Broadway,” after his widow transferred control to Hilton. Joseph Pulitzer pokes Hilton with a closed umbrella. There is an empty sepulchral monument labeled “Sacred to the Memory of A. T. Stew[art], with a sign that states “To Let” in the right foreground.
