President Roosevelt feels that Stanford University has been hard hit by the recent San Francisco earthquake and fire, and tells University President David Starr Jordan that he felt the damage to Stanford “with peculiar keenness because the sight of it impressed me so vividly.” Roosevelt hopes the university will still have some of its former beauty.

President Roosevelt asks Stanford President David Starr Jordan to give him an outline of what he wants him to say at the Hague Conference. He also has heard reports that Dr. Julius Goebel was dismissed from his position at Stanford because he disapproved of something Roosevelt had written. However, Roosevelt does not remember Goebel ever criticizing him about anything.

Edward B. Krehbiel to Theodore Roosevelt

Edward B. Krehbiel sends Theodore Roosevelt the details for his father’s visit to Stanford University. The elder Theodore Roosevelt is scheduled to speak briefly upon arriving at Palo Alto, California, before giving his main address on campus and attending a luncheon at one of the fraternity houses. He will leave the university with plenty of time to reach Berkeley, California, and give his scheduled lecture there. Krehbiel has not heard if the younger Roosevelt will be visiting Stanford along with his father, but understands that he has been invited and would be pleased to see him.

Benjamin Ide Wheeler, President of the University of California, has written to Governor Hiram Johnson and Theodore Roosevelt’s son, Theodore Roosevelt Jr., to clarify that the remainder of the plans for Roosevelt’s trip to California are in their hands. Wheeler does hope that the Roosevelts can come celebrate the University of California’s Charter Day. He also believes that it will be possible for Roosevelt to visit Stanford on March 24, but make it back for the lecture in San Francisco that afternoon. Wheeler expresses his fondness for Roosevelt Jr. and his wife.

If Theodore Roosevelt decides to speak at Stanford University, Benjamin Ide Wheeler suggests he do so on March 27. However, he warns there will be numberless speaking requests and advises Roosevelt only accept those of the Commonwealth Club and Harvard Club. Wheeler spoke to the Earle Foundation, and while they would appreciate an address on the bible translation, they would not accept it into their list.

Jordan denies that this had anything to do with Goebel’s removal.

David Starr Jordan writes to Congressman Needham regarding recent proposals that the Pinnacles be withdrawn from the forest reserve and turned into open land again to the benefit of cattlemen and others. Jordan explains that he and Professor William Russel Dudley were involved in its initial inclusion as part of the forest reserve, and support its continued protection. He admits he is not fully informed about the current matter, but hopes that Needham will take an interest in making sure that this valuable natural attraction will not be commercially exploited.
