President Roosevelt found British journalist John St. Loe Strachey’s article on his spelling order good but writes to clarify that his own action was very little. Instead, he supported “a proper movement of scholarship.” Roosevelt believes most of the changes authorized will become commonplace although some will certainly be rejected.

President Roosevelt tells Mary Cadwalader Jones he discusses what he hopes to accomplish concerning the spelling reform in an upcoming publication. While it may cause a temporary worsening in spelling, he is sure it will lead to better things.

Andrew Carnegie sends President Roosevelt newspaper clippings from the London Times discussing Roosevelt’s step toward reforming the English language. Professor Walter W. Skeat and the other British philologists approve and welcome Roosevelt’s actions. Carnegie is working with Skeat to create a joint committee to work on the language reforms and would like Roosevelt’s approval “so that the whole English-speaking race should march forward in unison.”
