Why Did Roosevelt Run in 1912?

Otto H. Kahn recounts a conversation with Theodore Roosevelt in the winter of 1915-1916 in which Kahn asked Roosevelt why he had chosen to run as the candidate of the Progressive party in 1912 when it was clear that he could not win. According to the lengthy quotations supplied by Kahn, Roosevelt admitted that he knew his defeat was a forgone conclusion, but that he felt that he had a duty to run to oppose those who were attempting to overturn his achievements in office. Roosevelt also asserts that he had to yield to the people who voted for him in the Republican primaries and who had appealed to him to make a run for the White House.

A listing of the officers of the Theodore Roosevelt Association and a photograph of Roosevelt by Walter Scott Shinn are found on the second page of the article.
